The association between moral intelligence and social adjustment with coping style among medicines residents of universities of Tehran

Abstract:

Introduction:

Coping style with stress is vital to the medical field. Moreover, moral intelligence and social adjustment are essential and effective component for mental health and decision making skills.  Therefore, the aim of current study was to investigate the relationship between moral intelligence and social adjustment with coping style among medical residents of universities of Tehran.

Materials and Methods:

This is a descriptive correlational study. The sample of current research includes 195 medicines residents of universities of Tehran that were selected through cluster sampling in 2014-15. They respond to three research instruments; Moral Intelligence Questionnaire (Lenik & Kiel), Stress Coping Strategy Scale (Moss & Billings) and Bell's Adjustment Inventory.  Data was analyzed by utilizing the Pearson correlation and regression analysis.

Results:

The findings indicated that there is a significant positive relationship between moral intelligence and problem solving, social support and cognitive evaluation, and also there is a negative significant relationship between moral intelligence and physical containment coping strategy (P>0.01). Additionally, it was observed the positive and significant relationship between social adjustment and emotion control (P>0.01).

Conclusion:

The results emphasize on the importance of moral intelligence and social adjustment in enhancing effective coping styles in hospital environment. Therefore, it is suggested that these factors should be considered more in residency’ empowerment coping programs.
