Survey of midwifery students’ knowledge of pregnant women’s bill of rights in Qom University of Medical Sciences

Introduction: Respect for mothers’ dignity is a step to increase mothers’ satisfaction of the health services provided. Midwifery students should, therefore, acquaint themselves with and remain committed to pregnant women’s bill of rights from the outset of their studies. This study aimed at determining the level of awareness of pregnant women’s bill of rights in Qom University of Medical Sciences during 2009. Methods: This was a descriptive and cross-sectional study of 58 junior and senior midwifery students performed by census. The data collection tool consisted of researcher-made questionnaire including 25 closed and one open question in seven areas of pregnant women’s bill of rights. The questionnaire reliability and validity was confirmed. Descriptive statistics including chi square test via SPSS 18.0 were used to analyze the data. Results: 37.9% of participants’ knowledge of the components of pregnant women’s bill of rights was good and 44.9% moderate. Also, the highest knowledge score was in the field rights of pregnant women belonged to right to information (2.4± 0.3) and the right to respect (2.1± 0.4). The lowest knowledge score belonged to the right to refuse (1.2± 0.2) and the right to protest (1.1± 0.1). Conclusions: The study showed that midwifery students' knowledge of the components of pregnant women’s bill of rights was 44.9% which would be interpreted as moderate. It is, therefore, recommended that planners, midwifery instructors and professors attend further to midwifery students’ knowledge pregnant women’s bill of rights.
