Introduction: The increasing development of medical and health science has provided the patients with more opportunities to continue their lives. Meanwhile, the prolonged, yet miserable, longevity of patients whose days are numbered has confronted care providers including nurses with the challenges concerning the productivity or futility of the provided care. Thus, this study has been conducted with the aim of determining the perception of intensive care unit nurses to futile care. Methods and Materials: This study was a cross-sectional study and was carried out on 170 nurses in intensive care units of hospitals in South Khorasan province in 2014. The studied nurses were selected by available sampling. Data were collected using a 17-item questionnaire (in terms of frequency and severity) developed by the researcher and was analyzed by SPSS software version 16 and descriptive-statistical methods (mean, standard deviation, frequency and relative frequency) and analytical methods (t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficient). Results: The results showed that the mean score of perception of nurses to futile care for nothing in the intensity (0.46 ± 3.2) and (1.2 ± 3.7) in terms of intensity and frequency, respectively. There was a significant relationship among the mean score of futile care and age, number of years of service and the type the unit (P <0.05). Conclusion: The mean level of nurses’ perception of futile care requires attention and planning concerning familiarizing nurses with this phenomenon and its causes and also providing training in the use of coping mechanisms to reduce complications.
