Introduction: Systematic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) is a non-specified inflammatory response to a series of infectious and non-infectious disorders. This investigation was conducted to determine epidemiological characteristics of the patients suffering from SIRS and admitted in ICUs of Jahrom’s Peymaniyeh Hospital.
Methods & Materials: This is a descriptive and cross-sectional study. Sampling methods was census and the patients were selected from the cases admitted in ICUs of Jahrom’s Peymaniyeh Hospital from March to August 2018. The data collection tool was a five-part checklist including demographic characteristics, disease condition, SIRS characteristics, progress stages of patients towards septic shock and also final condition of patient. The SPSS version 16 software and descriptive statistical tests (prevalence, mean) and inferential (chi-square test) and correlation coefficient (Spearman) were used for data analysis.
Results: Based on inclusion criteria, 41 patients were included in the study. The mean age of the studied patients was 61.85±23.81.Also, 15(36.58%) and 26(63.42%) of the studied cases were, in turn, females and males. The results showed that 10(24.39%) and 31(75.61%) of the studied patients were married and single respectively. There were not significant differences between SIRS and the following varieties: the history of allergy, respiratory diseases, malignancies, diabetes and immune disorders. However, significant differences were seen between SIRS and the history of cardiovascular diseases, gender, sex, intubation and fever.
Conclusions: The determination of epidemiological characteristics and using simple tools such as SIRS Score can help considerably to plan more effective interventions for SIRs patients. They also reduce the progress of disease towards sepsis, improve patient’s condition and decrease treatment costs.
