English

Introduction: In order to treat breast cancer, various methods including surgery are used.  Mastectomy, as a part of the womans body that symbolizes gender, leads to anxiety in women. Since the nurses plays a key role in patients psychological support before the operation, their actions can help reduce anxiety and increase the level of adherance to treatment of patients. The purpose of this study is to examin the effect of nursing care based on Orlando's theory on anxiety and treatment adherence of patients who are candidates for mastectomy.
Methods & Materials: This study is a randomized controlled clinical trial.  The samples will include patients with breast cancer who are candidates for mastectomy in the surgery department of Faghihi Hospital in Shiraz. The patients will be randomly allocated simply by lottery in two intervention (30 people) and control (30 people) groups.  Participants in the intervention group will receive nursing care based on Orlando's theory, but the control group will receive the departments routine care.  The patients' anxiety before and immediately after the intervention will be measured by the Beck anxiety questionnaire and their adherence to treatment before and one month after the intervention will be measured by the Madanlo questionnaire.  Data analysis will be carried out using the SPSS software version 21 at a significance level of 0.05.
Discussion: This study will evaluate the effect of nursing care based on Orlando's theory on the anxiety and adherance to treatment of mastectomy candidate patients. This study will provide evidence of a strategy for the implementation of efficient and effective nursing care by nurses, which may reduce the anxiety levels of patients before surgery and increase their adherance to treatment after surgery.
