Abstract
Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic brought about significant changes in the lives of students. Increased internet usage and decreased quality of life were among the major challenges during this period. This study conducted with the aim of determining the effect of self-care education on reducing internet addiction and improving the quality of life among nursing students.
Materials and Methods: This study was conducted with the two criteria of the intervention and control groups, as well as the cooperation of 50 nursing students. The intervention group received self-care education in six face-to-face sessions, while the control group had no intervention. Data were collected using the Kimberly Young Internet Addiction Questionnaire and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire before and after the intervention, and were entered into SPSS27. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using paired t-tests, t-tests, and one-way covariance analysis.
Results: The results of the study showed that the mean quality of life scores in the intervention group increased from 7.5 ± 85.12 before the intervention to 8.66 ± 99.05 after the intervention, which was statistically significant (P < 0.01). Additionally, the mean scores of internet addiction in this group decreased from 6.22 ± 44.33 before the intervention to 5.29 ± 33.04 after the intervention, which was also statistically significant (P < 0.01).
Conclusion: The results indicate a positive impact of self-care education on reducing internet usage and improving the quality of life among the intervention group students. Self-care education can serve as an effective strategy for reducing internet dependency and enhancing the quality of life for students in critical situations such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
