English

Introduction: Resilience refers to the capacity to cope with stressors and professional challenges, playing a crucial role in the development and performance of medical sciences students. Spiritual health—defined as a sense of meaning and purpose in life—is considered a potential enhancer of resilience. This study aimed to examine the relationship between spiritual health and resilience and to predict resilience based on spiritual health in medical science students in Zanjan.
Method and Materials: In this cross-sectional study conducted during Fall and Winter 2023, 201 nursing students from a public university were selected via convenience sampling. Data collection instruments included the Spiritual Health Questionnaire (five dimensions: Connection with God, Optimism, Sense of Gratitude, Motivation for Growth, Self-Esteem) and the Resilience Scale (two dimensions: Hardiness and Adaptability). A demographic form captured sex, age, marital status, residence, religion, field of study, and academic status. Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used to assess the relationship between spiritual health and resilience, and a multiple linear regression model was employed to predict resilience based on spiritual health and demographic factors, with an α-level of 0.05.
Results: The mean total score for spiritual health was 71.83 (SD = 14.81), and for resilience was 63.41 (SD=14.16). Pearson’s correlation indicated a strong positive relationship between spiritual health and resilience (r=0.766, p<0.001). In the regression model, spiritual health was the only variable that significantly predicted resilience (B=0.749, SE = 0.046, t = 16.153, p < 0.001). In contrast, demographic variables (sex, age, marital status, residence, religion, field of study, and academic status) showed no significant effects. The model explained 59% of the variance in resilience (R² = 0.59, F (14,186)= 18.45, p < 0.001).
Conclusion: The results show that spiritual health is an independent and key predictor of resilience among nursing students, while demographic factors do not significantly contribute. It is recommended that nursing educational programs incorporate spiritual interventions to enhance students’ spiritual resources, thereby improving resilience and the overall quality of nursing care.
