English

Introduction: Hypertension is one of the most common chronic diseases in the elderly, associated with extensive physical, psychological, and economic consequences. Non-adherence to treatment in these patients leads to increased hospitalization, healthcare costs, and reduced quality of life. Life expectancy, as a psychological factor, also plays an important role in promoting self-care behaviors. The BASNEF model, focusing on beliefs, attitudes, subjective norms, and enabling factors, represents an effective approach to changing health-related behaviors.
Methods: This study is a randomized controlled clinical trial conducted on elderly patients with hypertension attending selected health centers in Jahrom. Participants will be randomly assigned into two groups: intervention (n=48) and control (n=48). The intervention group will receive self-care training based on the BASNEF model over four sessions, while the control group will receive the routine care provided by the centers. Standard questionnaires (Madanlou and Snyder) will be used to assess treatment adherence and life expectancy before and two months after the intervention. Data will be analyzed using appropriate statistical tests, including independent t-test, paired t-test, chi-square test, with the help of SPSS software (version 27) at a significance level of 0.05.
Discussion: Self-care education based on the BASNEF model may serve as an efficient approach to empower elderly patients with hypertension, not only improving treatment adherence but also enhancing patients' life expectancy and quality of life.
