English

Introduction: Psychiatric nurses play a significant professional role in ensuring the mental health of the community. Happiness and subjective well-being play a crucial role in educational planning, enhancing the quality of academic life, and preventing psychological harm among students. This study was conducted to compare the factors influencing the happiness and subjective well-being of male and female high school students in Ahvaz.
Method: The present study was a descriptive-analytical study conducted during the 2023–2024 academic year involving male and female students in the second stage of high school in Ahvaz. From the study population, 126 students (63 girls and 63 boys) were selected using cluster and stratified sampling methods with random allocation. Data were collected using the "Factors Affecting Student Happiness" questionnaire (Abbasi, 2004) and the Student Subjective Well-being Questionnaire (SSWQ) by Renshaw et al. The data were analyzed using SPSS software (version 23), employing descriptive statistics and an independent t-test to compare the means between the two groups.
Findings: The results indicated differences between male and female regarding factors influencing happiness, specifically in the areas of curriculum content (P=0.007), school organizational climate (P=0.033), and school facilities (P=0.033). Regarding factors affecting subjective well-being, differences were observed between male and female in the dimensions of school connectedness (P=0.003) and enjoyment of learning (P=0.006), as well as in overall subjective well-being (P=0.027). Furthermore, a statistically significant difference was found between the public and non-public schools regarding the overall impact of factors influencing student happiness (P=0.0001).
Conclusion: The results of the present study indicate that there is no difference between male and female high school students regarding the overall impact of factors influencing happiness at school. However, given that factors such as curriculum content, organizational climate, and school facilities have a lesser impact on the happiness of girls and considering that factors like school connectedness and the enjoyment of learning contribute more to the subjective well-being of males than females, it is essential to pay special attention to the educational environment and implement reforms to the current situation.
