Introduction: The shift delivery process is a vital part of providing advanced health care. It is mandatory for nurses to observe ethical principles in this process. Therefore, raising the awareness of nurses in the field of ethics and shift delivery seems necessary. This study was conducted with the aim of improving the level of ethical criteria at the time of delivery of the nursing shift.
Materials & Methods: This study was performed by co-research method, in a period of 19 months, in the pediatric ward of Shiraz Namazi Hospital affiliated to Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in Fars Province (2012-2013). Participants included 12 nurses, 2 nurses' aid, a ward nurse, and a researcher as facilitator. First, the bottlenecks of nursing shift delivery in the study context were discovered by the participants and the facilitator through interviews and observation and recording of voices. Then, in two group rethinking sessions, an action plan was designed, program prioritization was determined, and empowerment of participants was done. The implementation of the action plan and immersion in action
took 4 months. At the end of the first cycle, the initial evaluation was performed with the help of the participants. The second cycle began with a rethinking of the results and lessons learned in the previous stage and group rethinking sessions was done. Then a new action plan was designed and implemented in the immersion phase. Finally, the facilitator and the participants evaluated the final results. The collected data were analyzed by combined method with content-inductive analysis.
Results: Judgment on patients' psycho-personality status was 9.6% before the study. While in the first and second
cycle it had reached zero. Judgment of colleagues before the study was 21.5%, while in the first and second cycle it was zero. The difference in all dimensions was statistically significant (p≤ 0.001). In general, the analysis of qualitative data led to the extraction of 1351 primary codes. The classification of codes led to the discovery of two main classes that showed the nursing shift delivery bottlenecks. One of the limitations of shift delivery was the lack of attention to ethical and legal requirements.
Conclusion: Nursing shift delivery is closely related to ethical and legal issues and familiarity with them is important
and necessary for nurses. Therefore, it seems necessary to teach ethical codes to nurses and nursing students at the time of delivery of the nursing shift.
