Introduction: The educational challenges of the residency period can have adverse effects on the future medical profession and consequently on the health of the society. Improving the quality of clinical education and developing the learning environment requires continuous review of the current situation, recognition of strengths and correction of weaknesses, and in this regard, assistants' perspective as an educational element can help to improve the current situation. Therefore, the study was conducted to examine the challenges of the radiology assistant training program in Mashhad medical sciences.
Materials and Methods: The present study was a qualitative study with a content analysis approach. Sampling was done in a targeted manner with the participation of 17 radiology assistants and professors in the academic year of
2018-2019. The data collection method was done through semi-structured interviews and the interviews continued until saturation. MAXQDA 10 software was used to code the data.
Results: After the implementation of the interviews, 20 sub-themes and 6 main themes including educational challenges (insufficient attention to efficient educational strategies, limited number of theory classes, use of traditional methods in teaching, lack of skills of some professors in transferring clinical skills, lack of expert professors for some skills); Challenges of professional ethics (lack of sufficient training on professional ethics and communication with patients, unavailability of clinical professors, weak interaction between professor and assistant); structural challenges (large amount of content and resources, lack of proportion between the number of professors and assistants, acceptance of a large number of assistants); challenges related to the evaluation of competencies (doing the evaluation without specific criteria and considering the subjectivity, not paying attention to the decision-making ability and clinical reasoning, the assistant's lack of awareness of his strengths and weaknesses); Executive challenges (seriousness of training from treatment, lack of training for some specialized procedures, lack of a written program for training general and specialized abilities and professional ethics, lack of proper training planning for the needs of assistants); and environmental challenges (lack of specialized facilities and equipment, lack of educational environment program design) were extracted.
Conclusion: The challenges expressed by the residents emphasize the need to consider solutions and revise the educational program according to the learning environment in order to improve the general and specialized competencies of radiology residents.
