Introduction:
Adherence to the principles of professionalism enables health care team to act according to professional standards and attend to patients’ health and welfare in all stages of their life while trying to sustain and promote their professional status. This study aimed to assess the health care team’s compliance with professional ethical codes as a means to facilitate clinical governance.
Material and methods:
This is a descriptive and cross-sectional study performed by a census of 211 health care staff in Jahrom. The data gathering tool consisted of a valid, reliable questionnaire including two sections of demographic information (age, sex, employment history, and ward) and 41 questions in 8 areas based on a 5-point Likert scale. Data analysis was performed by descriptive and analytic statistics via SPSS.
Results:
The overall compliance with ethical codes was 3.82 ± 0.75. The highest score belonged to patient care quality improvement (4.60) and the lowest score to commitment to confidentiality (2.78). There was a significant relationship between the type of ward (p=0.03), age (p=0.003) and adherence to professional ethics.
Conclusion:
It seems that compliance with professionalism is moderate among health care staff in Jahrom University of Medical Sciences. It is recommended that managers, planners, and instructors tend to enhance professionalism among health care staff by setting relevant policies and running service training.
